How Churches Implement a Formation Journey

A Formation Journey for the Whole Church

Symbol & Silence guides churches through focused seasons of spiritual formation.

Each Formation Journey centers on a biblical theme and invites participants into a rhythm of scripture, reflection, silence, and conversation.

Rather than simply studying ideas, the journey helps participants encounter God through a shared season of intentional practice.

Churches typically run a Formation Journey for 4–6 weeks, often aligned with meaningful seasons such as Lent, Holy Week, or Advent, though they can be used at any time during the year.

The Four Movements of a Formation Journey

Pastoral Preparation

Congregational Participation

Church leaders begin by reading the Ministry Guide, which explains:

  • the theological framework of the series
  • the symbolism within the biblical text
  • suggested sermon themes
  • pastoral guidance for leading the congregation through the season

Typically a church purchases one or two copies for pastoral staff.

Participants receive the Bible Study Guide, which serves as the core experience of the journey.

Each week includes:

  • scripture meditation
  • symbolic reflection
  • journaling prompts
  • small group discussion questions

Churches often distribute these guides through small groups, Sunday classes, or discussion gatherings.

Contemplative Practices

Throughout the season, participants can subscribe to the Symbol & Silence reflections on Substack, which provide short meditations connected to the theme of the journey.

These reflections help maintain spiritual focus between weekly gatherings

Contemplative Practices

Some churches choose to deepen the experience through contemplative gatherings.

These might include:

  • guided silence
  • prayer gatherings
  • meditation on scripture
  • small contemplative groups

Leaders facilitate these using the Contemplative Guide.

Designed to be Flexible

Every church implements the Formation Journey slightly differently.

Some churches:

  • integrate the themes into weekly sermons
  • run the study through small groups
  • host contemplative gatherings

Others simply invite individuals to follow the journey personally.

The materials are designed to support a variety of ministry contexts.
